I became interested in children’s books after spending a lot of time in The Reading Reptile, a great children’s book store in Kansas City. How did you come up with such a fun and silly idea? You wrote and did all the illustrations for your first book The Scrambled States of America. If you liked “ Don’t Play With Your Food” by Bob Shea and “ Open Wide” by Laurie Keller, as well as the other Arnie books by Laurie Keller, you will enjoy this.Laurie Keller, author of “The Scrambled States of America” To whom would you recommend this book? Anyone who loves stories involving talking food and silliness will get a kick out of this story. The illustrations are so colorful and expressive and funny! There is so much to look at on each page!Īnything you didn’t like about it? There is nothing I didn’t like about this book! Bing’s house and the plate that Arnie lies on, to the part where he starts to be a doughnut dog and has a collar. The illustrations in this book are hilarious! From the different types of doughnuts to the lady with the hypnotic eyes who “must…have…doughnuts”, Mr. Bing’s neighborhood is a dog free zone- but not a doughnut free zone! So Arnie agrees to be his pet doughnut-dog and they live happily ever after. They both try to come up with other ideas for what Arnie can do if he’s not to be eaten. Bing, who bought Arnie with the intention of snacking on him, just can’t bring himself to eat Arnie. What did you like about the book? This is just the silliest book about doughnuts ever! Arnie is a chocolate, frosted, sprinkle-covered doughnut (my favorite flavor, by the way!) and he just can’t wait to go home with someone! However, when he learns that he is meant to be EATEN he is shocked! He calls the baker to verify this, asks the other doughnuts if they know this- alas, they all know that doughnuts are meant to be eaten. Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 3 Arnie the Doughnut – written and illustrated by Laurie Keller, Square Fish, 9781250079473, c2003, 2016.
